1. The 20th amendment of Sri Lankan Constitution passed

The Sri Lankan Parliament have passed the 20th amendment of its constitution.

Key Points

  • The amendment was done to expand the powers of the President of Sri Lanka.
  • Under the new amendment the president will get the power to dissolve the Parliament after two years and six months when elected.
  • The amendment has empowered the President to appoint any person in the Government Offices.

2. SOFIA discovered water on Sunlit Surface of Moon

NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy(SOFIA) has confirmed the presence of water on the sunlit surface of Moon.

Key Points

  • Water molecules have been detected in the Clavius Crater of the Moon.
  • The Clavius Crater is located in the southern hemisphere of the Moon.
  • The Clavius Crater is one of the largest craters on the Moon. It is visible from the Earth.
  • SOFIA is a modified Boeing 747SP aircraft used by the astronomers to study the solar system and beyond.
  • SOFIA uses Faint Object infra-red Camera for the SOFIA Telescope(FORCAST) by which it picked up specific wavelength of 6.1 microns.
